Yoga Dry Eyes And Surya Namaskars

by Rama
(Bangalore)

A few year back I was suffering from severe dry eye syndrome, finding no relief through any drops. My eyes was always watering and swollen up, and nothing was really helping me.

At that point, I was just going through yoga sites and reading of people did 100 surya namaskars every day, and how they were so fit and energised by doing it regularly. I was inspired by it and started doing 100 Surya Namaskars everyday, along with it I would also do the pranayamas very regularly.

I was to leave for the US on a holiday in the month of August, and I was really worried about the trip wondering how I can go with such bad and irritating eyes.

Now coming to the point, I started doing 100 Surya Namaskars from the month of December, and continued without fail till April, though I did not see any immediate results, but after about 4 months suddenly my eyes felt so much better and normal, though irritation was still there but it had become quite rare, only sometimes something would trigger off the dryness.

I was amazed that before I left for the US my eyes became normal.

Although I kept doing it for 5 months, I had stopped doing 100 every day after the 5th month, only doing my regular yoga with 10 Surya Namaskars and other yoga asanas and of course the breathing exercises. Everytime I did pranayama, I would intend very strongly that all the toxins from eyes and the various parts of my body were released.

To do 100 Surya Namaskars at one go is tough as one needs a lot of time, so I used to do 50 in the morning and 50 in the evening, this way I was not letting boredom sink in too.

Although I always wanted to start again doing 100 Surya Namaskars I have not been able to bring myself to start. It was a challenge I took and completed it, and that was it.

However even now I do Surya Namaskars 10 times in the morning and 10 times in the evening and after that only I start doing other asanas, and finish it off with pranayama, Shavasana and meditation.

I believe I would find relief from some of the side effects of menopause, which has caused lot of weight gain around my stomach area, and also hot/ cold flashes(during the night) which had stopped for nearly 4 months, but have again started all of a sudden.

I truly believe yoga is the answer for many of our problems, and wish every body should take up basic yoga in their life.

Hi Rama, Are you OFF the lubricants completely? Which lubricants and eye drops were you using earlier and what was the frequency? What were your general symptoms? Whether the condition was acute, mild or severe? And did you undergone schirmer's test, what were your readings. Thanks in advance.

Yoga and dry eyes
by: Rama Ananth

I do not know what you want to know from me. As for dry eyes, it is very good to take lots of water, at last 2/3 liters of water. Have Amala Juice, and eat plenty of raw vegetables like cucumber, carrots, fruits and fruit juices without adding too much sugar. If you like karela then have karela bajji/ subji for it is very good for the eyes.
Before doing pranayama like bastrika and kapalabhati make a sankalp (resolve) that your eyes are perfectly fine. You may or may not see immediate positive effect, but if are patient and don't give up, you are sure to find relief. Another important thing is to blink after every half an hour for about 5 mins so that your eyes always remain naturally moisturised.
